Industrial M.2 NVMe SSD · PCIe 4.0

M.2 PCIe NVMe 4.0

The high-throughput NVMe tier for edge servers, video analytics and AI inference. Same M.2 form factor as Gen3 and twice the lane bandwidth — worth it only where the workload can actually use it.

Will it fit your board?

Three questions, each under a minute. Any one of them can rule this drive out — better to find that out here than after the goods ship.

1 Does your motherboard support PCIe 4.0?
2 How long is your M.2 slot?
3 What kind of writes will the drive see?

A Gen4 drive in a Gen3 slot still works — it just falls back to Gen3 speed. That is the one thing worth confirming before a volume order.

Performance

PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe — up to 5,000 MB/s

Up to 5,000 MB/s sequential read across the whole range — roughly 1.6× the Gen3 ceiling at the same capacity, and held steady from 512 GB to 4 TB.

SATA III HDD 70–200 MB/s
SATA III SSD 450–550 MB/s
PCIe 3.0 x4 NVMe 2,000–3,500 MB/s
PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe 5,000–7,000 MB/s

Theoretical lane bandwidth for PCIe 4.0 x4 is about 7.9 GB/s — double the Gen3 ceiling. Our 550PRO-class drive holds 5,000 MB/s across the range, peaking at 5,200 MB/s on 4 TB.

Three things must line up to reach Gen4 speed

The motherboard chipset

Many industrial boards top out at Gen3. A Gen4 drive on such a board runs at Gen3 speed — nothing breaks, but nothing is gained either.

The CPU and its lanes

The M.2 slot has to be wired to Gen4 lanes. A Gen4-capable chipset with Gen3-wired slots still gives you Gen3 speed.

The workload itself

Sequential transfers gain the most. Signage, POS and video-recording workloads rarely notice the difference — Gen3 is the better value there.

If your workload does not need the extra sequential throughput, the Gen3 series is the better buy — we will say so if that is the case.

Send us your board model with the enquiry and we will tell you which generation it actually runs before you commit to a volume order.

FAQ

Common Questions About M.2 NVMe SSDs

Answers to the questions that come up most often before an order. Don’t see yours? Ask us — a datasheet and quote follow within 24 hours.

How much faster is Gen4 than Gen3 in practice?

On sequential reads our Gen4 series holds up to 5,000 MB/s across the whole 512 GB – 4 TB range (5,200 MB/s peak on 4 TB), against up to 3,100 MB/s for the Gen3 series at the same capacity — roughly 1.6×. That gap is real on large sequential transfers. Random small-block work improves far less, so a database or a POS terminal will not feel 1.6× faster.

What happens if my board turns out to be Gen3 only?

The drive still works — PCIe is backward compatible and there is nothing you can damage by fitting it. The board simply negotiates Gen3 and the drive runs at Gen3 speed. It simply negotiates Gen3 and runs at Gen3 speed. If your board is Gen3, tell us: the Gen3 series costs less and gives you the same result.

Which controllers and NAND flash do you use?

Controllers are SMI, Yeestor, Realtek or Maxio depending on capacity and availability; NAND comes from Intel, Micron, SAMSUNG, SK Hynix, SanDisk, Kioxia or YMTC. We confirm the exact pairing in the datasheet for your order — if your design requires a specific controller, tell us and we will quote to it.

Why is the 512 GB slower to write than the larger capacities?

512 GB writes at up to 2,450 MB/s while 1 TB and above reach 4,000–4,100 MB/s. The smaller capacity carries fewer NAND packages, which reduces the parallelism available; we confirm the exact figure against the BOM for your order. Reads are unaffected — 5,000 MB/s across the range.

Do I need a heatsink?

The 550PRO-class board ships with a graphene heat spreader that keeps the controller within its 0–70 °C rating under sustained load, so an added heatsink is normally unnecessary. In a sealed enclosure with no airflow, tell us the duty cycle and we will confirm whether extra thermal management is worth it.

Is NVMe 1.4 the same as PCIe 4.0?

No — they are two independent numbers that often appear together in an enquiry. PCIe 4.0 is the bus generation and sets the bandwidth ceiling. NVMe 1.4 is the protocol revision and sets which command-set features the drive supports. A drive can be PCIe 4.0 with NVMe 1.4, and the two figures never have to match.

Can you do OEM — our logo and our packaging?

Yes. Silkscreen on the label, your own branded box and firmware strings are all settable before the first unit is built. MOQ is 50 pcs for a branded run.
